How to apply for a Medical Wig through your health Insurance.
We understand that medical hair loss can be challenging, and we’re here to make the process easier.
Hair loss conditions that may qualify include, but are not limited to:
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Alopecia (Areata, Totalis, Universalis)
- Gastric bypass or bariatric surgery
- Lupus
- Burn injuries
- Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder)
- Thyroid disorders
How It Works
Step 1 - Contact Your Insurance Provider
Begin by contacting your insurance company. Ask if they cover a Cranial Prosthesis—not a wig. Important questions to ask:
- Do you cover Cranial Prostheses?
- What is the coverage amount?
- Do you cover human hair, synthetic hair, or both?
Some insurance providers that have offered coverage:
Aetna, Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Humana, TriCare
Step 2 - Get a Prescription
If your insurance confirms coverage, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist, oncologist, or primary care doctor. They will assess your hair loss and, if it is due to a medical condition, provide a prescription for a Cranial Prosthesis.

Step 3 - Schedule a Consultation
Once you have your prescription, we’ll schedule a consultation to go over the details of your Cranial Prosthesis. We’ll discuss:
- Fit and comfort
- Hair type (human or synthetic)
- Style preferences
- Color, length, and more
Step 4 - Purchase and Receive Your Medical Wig
Your Cranial Prosthesis can be custom-made to fit your needs, or you may choose an in-stock wig. Some insurance plans allow more than one medical wig, so you may be eligible for future replacements depending on your coverage.
